Thursday Trends–Bucking Wedding Traditions Part 2

image

We’re continuing our theme from last week with more ideas of things your wedding could do without…if you so choose.

7. FORMAL WEDDING REGISTRY — Brides and grooms are getting married later–in their late 20’s or early 30’s–and the need for a formal or traditional wedding registry is waning. Take advantage of services that work for you…a honeymoon and/or gift card registry are alternative options.

8. DINNER — No one’s coming to the wedding for the succulent steak or Cornish game hen, folks. Let’s skip the formal dinner and do something fun and themed instead–perhaps a self-serve brunch for late morning weddings, or a dessert or appetizer buffet. You’ll save yourselves a bundle and it’ll be much more fun for you!

image

9. ALCOHOL — If drinking at your wedding isn’t that important to you, skip it. You’ll be amazed at how much this will reduce your wedding budget expenses. If you do not feel strongly about one drink, service wine from your big-box warehouse store to serve.  Also, just going from Premium to House brand is a simple way to cut costs!

10. A “WEDDING CAKE” — When ordering the cake, don’t mention that it’s for a wedding. This will automatically double the price. Birthday cakes have two layers of cake and one layer of filling. Order a “three-tiered cake” instead with the two layers of cake and one layer of filling. Your guests won’t even notice. Then, serve on a buffet vs. being plated and you will not have waste! Or, how about just having cupcakes?

image

11.  WEDDING FAVORS — Unless you can pull this off for cheap and in a non-tacky way, don’t sweat the wedding favors. Instead, do something very simple or have a card at each seat stating that you are making a donation to a charity of YOUR choice. If you have a candy buffet, you could provide little treat bags to fill at a candy station on the way out. A glass votive with your wedding date on it isn’t going to last long at anyone’s house, except for your mother-in-law’s (maybe!).

12.  LIMOUSINE SERVICE— This is something to ask yourselves…do we have a friend who has a nice, fancy convertible, or specialty car? Can we make do with our own car decorated nicely? Mom and Dad driving us to the church might suffice!

The most important thing to remember is that it’s your love, your budget, and your day! Do what you CAN and do what YOU want!

We can certainly help you keep or buck those wedding traditions in the Chicago area, and we’re ready to get started!

Do you have other ideas for wedding traditions that can be “bucked”?

Tuesday Tips — Throwing Yourself an Engagement Party?

Perfect Day Wedding Planners wedding ring

After he’s popped the question and put a ring on it, you want to tell the world–right? And what better way than to throw a PARTY?! This is certainly not a requirement or matter of etiquette. Tradition says that the parents of the bride-to-be should be the ones to host an engagement party. If that’s not feasible, or you want the engagement announcement to be a surprise, you could just throw it yourselves! Heck, it seems everyone’s bucking wedding traditions these days!

Here are some tips along with questions to ask yourselves as a couple before you embark on this pre-wedding adventure.

1. Do you want a formal or casual gathering? Formal would probably require a sit-down dinner. Do you have a space large enough to host everyone you would want to invite? Does your budget allow for that? A casual affair is basically “anything goes”. What about just an intimate potluck with your very closest friends and family? Or an outside BBQ?

2. Do you want to send out invitations? Or just invite people by phone, text, email or e-vites?

3. What kind of food do you want to serve? Again, this boils down to formal or casual. Don’t try to make it so big of a deal that everyone gets stressed out. Save that adrenaline for your wedding planning! Food and drink should be simple, yet sufficient.

4. Do you want lots of decor or does it even matter? You could go all out with a beach or vintage theme, country or Disney dress-up party, OR your focus could just be on the fun, fellowship and the announcement! If you have your basic wedding theme picked out, then maybe try to match that. If not, no biggie…just go with your favorite colors! Check out our Pinterest board here for some ideas.

5. Do you want to provide entertainment? A piano player would be a lovely background to a formal affair.

6. Do you want to have some fun activities and/or games? Bags or Cornhole is always a party hit. Those trivia games about the couple are sure to bring much laughter. Here’s some other ideas for engagement party games.

7. Everyone is going to want to see the rock. So be sure and get a nice manicure and a good cleaning on that ring before your party. You know you’ll be showing it off all night long!

Thursday Trends–Bucking Wedding Traditions Part 1

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Things Your Wedding Can Do Without Beautiful BrideIt seems the trend these days in some weddings is to buck tradition. If your budget is already stretched, sometimes it’s best to reevaluate what things are a must and what things you can do without. We have so many ideas for you in this area that we’re gonna spread them out into two parts.

Here’s the first six things to consider doing without for your wedding:

1. SAVE-THE-DATES — Skip the printed postcards announcing  your wedding date and use e-vites, Facebook, email and the old-fashioned phone to spread the word to out-of-town guests.   (NOTE:  We still feel, however, that there is HUGE value in having this personal touch.)

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Save the Date

2.  RELATIVES TWICE REMOVED — The more you can trim your guest list, the more money you’ll save overall!   Keep the invite list to the must-haves, then send out a wedding announcement to the masses when all is said and done.

3.  LARGE BRIDAL PARTY — While it may look impressive in wedding photos, a large bridal party is going to cause more headache, stress and strain on the wallet.  (You can still incorporate those who have a special place in your heart, by giving them a special task or project to be a part of your wedding.)

4.  MATCHY-MATCHY DRESSES — Don’t even pretend you’re going to find a magical dress that looks good on all the girls that they’ll treasure forever. Choose a theme or color and allow the girls to find their own dresses that fit them (and their wallet). Provide accessories as your gift instead. To at least keep the style consistent to the wedding, maybe have the girls all wear the same shoes. Still not convinced? Take a look at mismatched dresses and shoe ideas on Pinterest.com. While you’re there, check out Perfect Day Wedding Planners’ boards.

5.  PROFESSIONAL HAIR & MAKEUP — For some, this is non-negotiable. We personally LOVE this part but for some, the budget warrants cut backs. Please do not feel guilty spending money on it but if you have a friend who is great in this area, by all means, enlist their services and then save save up for that honeymoon! (REMEMBER:  Anything visible in your wedding day photos is permanent.)

6.  TUXES — Weddings aren’t the formal event they used to be. If you’re wanting a more laid back wedding, have the guys in nice slacks and suspenders; or allow your guys to relax in their style. They’ll love you for it! Just be sure–whatever the girls and guys wear–that it matches your wedding style and theme!

Come back next week as we give you six more ideas of things your wedding can do without! Be sure and call us to schedule your consultation. We absolutely love helping plan the weddings of Chicago area brides!

Tuesday Tips–Four Things To Look For In A Travel Agent or Honeymoon Planner

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Honeymoon Travel Agent Heart Beach

Your honeymoon is probably the most important trip you will ever take. It also represents a significant financial investment for the two of you. So doesn’t it make sense to work with a travel agent that takes an active interest in you as a couple?

Here are four things a good honeymoon planner or travel agency will do when helping you plan your perfect honeymoon:

1. They will take the time to get to know you. They are eager to learn about your likes and dislikes, what your budget is,  and what the words “trip of a lifetime” means to you.

2. They offer to formulate options and itineraries based on your personal information and their own experiences with multiple destinations and resorts.

3. They are able to put together a personalized package, including airfare, hotels, transfers and insurance. A travel agent can typically save you a considerable amount of money. They can offer you unpublished discounted pricing and get special upgrades that you couldn’t get on your own.

4. They offer to send you a presentation complete with photos, resort amenities and excursions so that you can really envision what your honeymoon will be like. You might have a perfect geographical location in mind for your honeymoon, but do you know the best place to stay to enjoy real quiet time? A good travel agent knows where you can enjoy high adventure, what resorts treat you like royalty, and where you can get the best service…plus a whole lot more.

When you use a honeymoon planner (or travel agent), the work, worry and stress is removed from your plate. You’ll get everything at a fantastic price, without all the time consuming hassle of planning it yourself. Contact your wedding planner today for recommendations on travel agents they have had experience with. They are your best source!

Combine your desires with the expert travel knowledge of a seasoned agent and your honeymoon will be perfect from start to end.

Thursday Trends — Shoes to Shine in!

Perfect Day Wedding Planners white satin high heel shoes

Ahhhh your wedding shoes. Do you go for comfort or style? Bling or no bling? Dress shoes or Converse for the guys? Ballet shoes, flip flops, or bare feet?! We’ve seen it all! And we’re sure you have too!

As we always say — it’s your wedding! It’s your day! Wear what you want. No one else is walking in your shoes but YOU! There’s no etiquette or tradition to deal with here so that’s a relief.

For starters, check out our Pinterest “Shoes to Shine” board here –> http://pinterest.com/perfectwedder/shoes-to-shine-wedding/

Just a few tips for you:

  • Be sure and practice walking in your shoes before the big day. You’ll want to “break them in” so you don’t get blisters.
  • Definitely wear your shoes to your rehearsal.
  • Don’t wear really high heels if you normally aren’t used to them OR bring a comfy pair of shoes to change into for the reception. Maybe some cute tennis shoes glittered up with sequins?
  • Maybe add a little touch of bling to the bottom of your shoe with an “I DO” sticker like this: http://pinterest.com/pin/284430532689276209/

Lastly, check out one of our past Wedding Planning Boot Camp vendors, Sandy Hurtado of Chi Sandals. She’s got some great sandals!   www.ChiSandals.com

Tuesday Tips–Receiving Lines . . . Yay or Nay?

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Receiving Line Sweetheart TableHow in the world are you going to see, talk to and thank everyone who comes to your wedding?! You definitely want to extend your gratitude to friends and family who traveled from afar, and receiving lines have usually been the solution to this dilemma. Traditionally, they are also considered good and proper etiquette. But most wedding traditions and etiquette are being questioned like crazy these days! If you decide to buck the status quo, here are other options beyond the traditional receiving line based on the number of people attending your day.

  • Having fewer than about 50 guests? Have a cocktail hour right after your ceremony. After you get those last few pictures done, head on over where everyone is gathered!
  • For a guest list of about 100, you could just have your officiate dismiss guests row by row. You could stay at the front of your ceremony site or just outside the entry doors.
  • Any wedding over 150 guests should probably include the typical receiving line at the reception site or NO LINE AT ALL!

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Receiving Line Thank You

Finally, it is not a necessity to have a receiving line at your wedding. Focus on talking to your family and then meet the remaining guests on the dance floor, where you will likely spend the rest of the evening anyway.  Whatever option you decide on as a couple will be great. Do what fits your personalities and the “feel” of your wedding. Make sure your guests have fun and feel thanked and it’ll all work out just fine.

Thursday Trends–Candy Bars & Buffets: Top 5 Things to Consider

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Candy Buffet and Sweets Table

Life is short, eat candy! Sugary treats at weddings aren’t anything new, but the trend of having a whole table dedicated to PURE CANDY is one that has taken off like a lightening bolt! We guarantee your guests will gather around this buffet several times throughout the day and night. And here’s five sweet ideas to keep them coming back again and again.

1. Color — You’ll of course want to match your wedding theme. Stick with a monochromatic look or go all out with a rainbow of colors and candy types. Also, different shades of the same color looks really chic.

2. Variety — So many sweets, so little time! Malted Milk Balls™, marshmallows, rock candy, Hershey’s Kisses®, gumballs, gummy worms or bears, Pixy Stix, candy sticks, Jordan almonds, lollipops, Tootsie Rolls®, salt water taffy . . . we’re only scratching the surface of your choices. Maybe you’d like to have all the old time candy products like this site offers.  Click here to look through our “Candy Buffet Inspiration Board” on Pinterest.com. Be sure and follow us while you’re there.

3. Labels — Tell your guests what they are sweetening up with by labeling each item. There are lots of free printables available online like this or this. Or pass this detail on to your wedding planner.

4. Levels — Display the treats in different sizes of glass jars or bowls. Make sure you have varying levels so it is pleasing to the eye and easy to reach. We recommend having your wedding planner do all the set up or hiring a candy buffet company to take care of everything from purchasing to set up to clean up. This will ensure you have an expert looking display.

5. Double Duty — Your candy buffet can also serve as your wedding favor. Have some bags customized with your names or a sweet saying like this. Place them on the table so your guests can take their treats home. You could also display this lovely poem in a frame:

Step right up to this candy buffet,

It’s a sweet addition to a wonderful day.

This is a treat we are offering you,

On this day when we say “I Do”.

Use the scoop, choose what you like,

Leave some for others, be polite.

As you enjoy your bag of treats,

Please remember

Love Is Sweet!

Do you have any other suggestions for sweetening up the candy buffet?
