Tuesday Tips–Ring Bearer Basics

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Ring Bearer holding Pillow

Little boys in velvet shorts are pretty much a thing of the past. In fact, we’ve seen girls as the ring bearers — and even dogs! After you’ve decided together as a couple whether or not to even HAVE a ring bearer, the next decision is WHO. After that, what will you have them wear?

Here are some tips as you navigate the options:

THE SKINNY: It’s the same deal as asking the flower girls. When you ask his parents if he can be in the party, you’re also working from the assumption that they’ll pay for the outfit, so bring that up in the beginning.

THE FORMALITY: Look for a tiny tux if you’re having a black tie affair. If your style is more casual, there are tons of cute options for these little guys — a lightweight cotton or linen suit, short-tails in a matching hue or a sailor suit would all work well. Pair a suit with some Converse shoes and cool shades like this cutie!

THE STYLE: Unless he’s wearing a full-on suit or tux, the ring bearer needn’t match the groom or groomsmen perfectly. Give him a bit more color and flair than you would his older counterparts. Or just give him a tie in the wedding colors and some signs to make everyone laugh.

THE ACCESSORIES: The most important accessory for this party member is the ring pillow, so choose one that complements your theme without clashing with the ring bearer’s outfit.

Like some flower girls, the ring bearers might just be the comic relief from all the wedding seriousness. If they “chicken out” or run wildly instead of walk down the aisle, don’t let it ruin the day. Children can sometimes be unpredictable. Go with the flow and hope for the best. They’ll still be adorable and the parents will be honored you asked!

Tuesday Tips–How To Pick A Wedding Theme

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Super Bowl Football Wedding Theme

Combining the dreams, tastes, likes/dislikes, nationalities and personalities of two people for one of the biggest days of your lives is a big feat. Your wedding choices will be the first of many big decisions you make in your married life.

Here are some questions to ask each other and tips for choosing a theme you are both happy with:

1. HERITAGE — Consider the nationalities of your families. Have you always wanted to incorporate traditions from your religion into your wedding day? How will this play out in your choices together? Maybe you’ll both decide a destination wedding that fits with your culture is the best plan!

2. COLORS — This is usually the starting point for many couples. Maybe talk first as a couple about the colors you don’t like and go from there. It’s usually best to pick two or three contrasting colors instead of just one. You could even just go with different hues of the same color. Here’s a great Pinterest board with some color palette ideas. We also have several color inspirations on our Pinterest boards.

3. SEASON — Would you like the season of your wedding to dictate your decor theme? Fall is a wonderful time for an outdoor wedding and usually calls for the rich, deep colors of brown, orange, yellow and green. Winter is a wonderful time for blues and whites or the bright reds and greens of Christmas time. Spring is typically filled with a mix of pastel colors and the fresh floral blooms of the season. Summer is a great time for a beach theme.

4. LOCATION — You’ll want to make sure that any colors or themes you use don’t clash with your venue. If the room where you’re holding your ceremony has an art deco vibe to it, a vintage or shabby chic inspired theme will probably not work out too well.

There are many things to consider as you pick out the basic components to your wedding. However, once these are chosen, other decisions may fall right into place. Your Chicago area wedding planners are standing ready to help!

Tuesday Tips — Will You Be My Bridesmaid? 6 Creative “Proposal” Ideas

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Orange Bridesmaid Dresses Bridesmaid Proposals

The sisters and girlfriends you want standing with you at your wedding have been with you through thick and thin…literally. When it comes to asking them to be a part of your special day, get creative! Between searching Google, Pinterest.com and Etsy.com, you’re sure to hit some goldmines. In fact, don’t forget to check out our Pinterest boards for all things wedding in the Chicago area!

In the mean time, here’s six ideas to get those creative juices flowing:

1. Your bridesmaids are often the ones to ensure you don’t “unravel” before that grand day. Tie that thought in with a handwritten message on torn fabric wrapped around an empty spool. Take a look at this tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

2. You and your fiance play the leading roles in your day, but you gotta have some other stars too! What about a star bracelet with a sweet card that reads “I’ve got the script, but I need the stars.”

3. Don’t promise you’ll pick a dress they can wear again, but make sure and promise a cute dress! This Etsy shop has instant downloads of some great cards with some sweet sayings.

4. Bridesmaid survival kits are always a hit! Pick things that will remind them of your inside jokes while also helping them survive by your side the whole way.

5. He put a ring on your finger, so put a ring on theirs. A candy ring pop can be used in various ways. It’s cute, it’s nostalgic and it’s sugar. Enough said!

6. Make sure they know how important they are. “I couldn’t say ‘I DO’ without YOU!” is always a great sentiment. Or here’s the motherload of questions to ask!

However you ask your “girls”, make it special. Make it memorable. And make it creative!

Tuesday Tips — Throwing Yourself an Engagement Party?

Perfect Day Wedding Planners wedding ring

After he’s popped the question and put a ring on it, you want to tell the world–right? And what better way than to throw a PARTY?! This is certainly not a requirement or matter of etiquette. Tradition says that the parents of the bride-to-be should be the ones to host an engagement party. If that’s not feasible, or you want the engagement announcement to be a surprise, you could just throw it yourselves! Heck, it seems everyone’s bucking wedding traditions these days!

Here are some tips along with questions to ask yourselves as a couple before you embark on this pre-wedding adventure.

1. Do you want a formal or casual gathering? Formal would probably require a sit-down dinner. Do you have a space large enough to host everyone you would want to invite? Does your budget allow for that? A casual affair is basically “anything goes”. What about just an intimate potluck with your very closest friends and family? Or an outside BBQ?

2. Do you want to send out invitations? Or just invite people by phone, text, email or e-vites?

3. What kind of food do you want to serve? Again, this boils down to formal or casual. Don’t try to make it so big of a deal that everyone gets stressed out. Save that adrenaline for your wedding planning! Food and drink should be simple, yet sufficient.

4. Do you want lots of decor or does it even matter? You could go all out with a beach or vintage theme, country or Disney dress-up party, OR your focus could just be on the fun, fellowship and the announcement! If you have your basic wedding theme picked out, then maybe try to match that. If not, no biggie…just go with your favorite colors! Check out our Pinterest board here for some ideas.

5. Do you want to provide entertainment? A piano player would be a lovely background to a formal affair.

6. Do you want to have some fun activities and/or games? Bags or Cornhole is always a party hit. Those trivia games about the couple are sure to bring much laughter. Here’s some other ideas for engagement party games.

7. Everyone is going to want to see the rock. So be sure and get a nice manicure and a good cleaning on that ring before your party. You know you’ll be showing it off all night long!

Tuesday Tips–Four Things To Look For In A Travel Agent or Honeymoon Planner

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Honeymoon Travel Agent Heart Beach

Your honeymoon is probably the most important trip you will ever take. It also represents a significant financial investment for the two of you. So doesn’t it make sense to work with a travel agent that takes an active interest in you as a couple?

Here are four things a good honeymoon planner or travel agency will do when helping you plan your perfect honeymoon:

1. They will take the time to get to know you. They are eager to learn about your likes and dislikes, what your budget is,  and what the words “trip of a lifetime” means to you.

2. They offer to formulate options and itineraries based on your personal information and their own experiences with multiple destinations and resorts.

3. They are able to put together a personalized package, including airfare, hotels, transfers and insurance. A travel agent can typically save you a considerable amount of money. They can offer you unpublished discounted pricing and get special upgrades that you couldn’t get on your own.

4. They offer to send you a presentation complete with photos, resort amenities and excursions so that you can really envision what your honeymoon will be like. You might have a perfect geographical location in mind for your honeymoon, but do you know the best place to stay to enjoy real quiet time? A good travel agent knows where you can enjoy high adventure, what resorts treat you like royalty, and where you can get the best service…plus a whole lot more.

When you use a honeymoon planner (or travel agent), the work, worry and stress is removed from your plate. You’ll get everything at a fantastic price, without all the time consuming hassle of planning it yourself. Contact your wedding planner today for recommendations on travel agents they have had experience with. They are your best source!

Combine your desires with the expert travel knowledge of a seasoned agent and your honeymoon will be perfect from start to end.

Tuesday Tips–Receiving Lines . . . Yay or Nay?

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Receiving Line Sweetheart TableHow in the world are you going to see, talk to and thank everyone who comes to your wedding?! You definitely want to extend your gratitude to friends and family who traveled from afar, and receiving lines have usually been the solution to this dilemma. Traditionally, they are also considered good and proper etiquette. But most wedding traditions and etiquette are being questioned like crazy these days! If you decide to buck the status quo, here are other options beyond the traditional receiving line based on the number of people attending your day.

  • Having fewer than about 50 guests? Have a cocktail hour right after your ceremony. After you get those last few pictures done, head on over where everyone is gathered!
  • For a guest list of about 100, you could just have your officiate dismiss guests row by row. You could stay at the front of your ceremony site or just outside the entry doors.
  • Any wedding over 150 guests should probably include the typical receiving line at the reception site or NO LINE AT ALL!

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Receiving Line Thank You

Finally, it is not a necessity to have a receiving line at your wedding. Focus on talking to your family and then meet the remaining guests on the dance floor, where you will likely spend the rest of the evening anyway.  Whatever option you decide on as a couple will be great. Do what fits your personalities and the “feel” of your wedding. Make sure your guests have fun and feel thanked and it’ll all work out just fine.

Tuesday Tips–Top 8 Do’s and Don’ts in Planning Your Wedding

Top 8 Do's and Don'ts in Planning Your Wedding
–> DO set your date so you know which venue works within that. This is the #1 thing to do. Check with your immediate family and closest friends.
–> DON’T hire vendors before your wedding date is booked at your venues.
–> DO book your venue. Definitely the second most important thing to do.
–> DON’T hire your florist without having your wedding party size confirmed and wedding theme chosen. How can you choose without knowing what look you are after?
cropped-istock_000019128966small.jpg
–> DO hire a planner who helps you stick to your budget and saves you costs. Read our post here about tips on hiring a wedding planner.
–> DON’T take on too many DIY projects. You will overwhelm yourself, and max out the stress. We suggest only 1-3 smaller projects. Pinterest wedding ideas will take over your life if you let them. 🙂
–> DO start your wedding timeline (schedule of events) once you begin booking your vendors. Click here for a sample timeline.
–> DON’T jump ahead in the wedding schedule. The suggested order is there for a reason. When one thing gets ahead of another, there can be an unintended ripple effect.
