Thursday Trends–Should You Have A “First Look” or “First Touch” Photo?

Seeing each other before the ceremony…such a controversial subject!

Even though this wedding tradition is seeping with superstition, many still follow it.

If you’re ready to shirk this superstitious tradition, then a “first look” moment may be just the thing. We adore the expressions on Andrew and Amanda’s faces as they see each other! LOVE!

There are actually several benefits to seeing one another before the ceremony. When you’re away from the tension of the ceremony and details, you can experience this unique and personal moment more freely. You can both let your emotions flow without fear of being on display. Some couples have said that it even took their nervousness away and they were more relaxed during the ceremony than they thought they would be.

According to one wedding photographer, there are several circumstances that could call for a “first look”:

  • You have an evening ceremony and you want to use natural light to capture your important photos.
  • You have a tight wedding schedule and you need to do all of your group/family photos before the ceremony.
  • You want to have plenty of time to venture out for your bride/groom photos.
  • You don’t mind trying out this new tradition.

Only you can decide if this is the right choice for you & your groom!

Not ready to dive in head first with breaking this tradition? Then maybe a “first touch” is a better choice.

It’s still a moment dripping with emotion and anticipation. Many have also opted to read each other a special note at this time! What a sweet memory!

Both of these options definitely make for some great photo opportunities. Discuss these ideas with your Chicago Area Wedding Planners. They might be just the solution to some photography timing issues or your wedding day nerves!

Why not take a look through our Pinterest board for some “first touch” or “first look” inspiration?

What do you think of this wedding trend?

Thursday Trends–Top Colors For Fall Weddings

It’s that time of year when the leaves start changing colors, different flowers and shrubs start blooming, and there’s a crisper breeze blowing. Fall is a great time for a wedding. In fact, we’ve had a wedding every weekend so far in September! The season may have no impact on your color choices, but if it does here are some of the top ones we’re seeing for fall weddings.

ORANGE: Whether it’s used in your bridesmaid dresses, flowers or linens, orange is definitely a fall wedding favorite. Pair it with a mustard yellow, brown and earthy green for the full fall impact. Take a peek at our orange inspiration board here.

OLIVE GREEN: You might not use this as the main color in your wedding, but it sure makes a great accent for napkins, chargers, table runners or florals. It looks classy with purple, lavender or blush pink. A rustic-styled wedding looks great with the combination of olive green, creams and burlap fabric. We also love the interesting mix of olive green, steel blue and a latte shade like this inspiration board shows. Check out our Olive Green Color Palette Inspiration Board here.

TURQUOISE: This seems to be one of the hottest colors of the year…and for all seasons! It looks great paired with orange and brown. We love it when used as a sash over a white chair cover. Flip through our turquoise color palette board on Pinterest for more inspiration.

RED: This will always be a classic color. It’s vibrant, and blends well with almost anything! We love it with black and white for a classy, elegant feel. It’s also a great pop of color against a white wedding dress when used in your florals.

Thursday Trends–FUN AND CREATIVE Placecard Ideas

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Place Card Table

Have you thought at all about the place cards for your wedding reception? This may seem like a very small detail, but think about this. When you arrive to a wedding reception, what is the first thing YOU look for? Where you’re going to sit, right?? So, do you think this is a pretty important aspect of the reception? YES!

We’ve had some really creative place cards at our weddings recently. Take a look at these ideas:

RUSTIC MEETS SHABBY CHIC — We love what Amanda and Andrew did with their place cards. The bride lovingly hand wrote each name on bright yellow card stock draped over a piece of twine strung inside a rustic picture frame. Miniature clothespins helped to keep them attached, while also adding an aesthetic touch.

WEDDING COLORS AND WINE CORKS — Kandice and Joe recruited a lot of friends over the past year to give them their wine corks. They carefully sliced the side of each one and then we set in the pre-printed cards. Each name was mounted on navy card stock for another pop of their wedding colors.

SENTIMENTALITY AND SIMPLICITY — Michelle and Marcus decided to keep it simple on elegant white printed cards in a calligraphy font. Their creativity and sentimentality came out in the picture display of Michelle’s parents from their wedding day many years prior. The frame is also a vintage piece and very special piece to the family.

DOUBLE DUTY PLACE CARD AND FAVOR — Katie and Andrew intertwined their wedding colors, seating placement AND a favor all in one! They hand wrote each name and table number and then mounted each to designer paper. The cards were then slid into a clear plastic bookmark holder which also doubled as a place to store the photo booth pictures! The ribbon ties on the ends proudly displayed their wedding colors. What a GREAT favor idea that will be used by many!

Thursday Trends — Bridal (& Groom!) Shower Themes for the Creatively-Challenged!

Perfect Day Wedding Planner Bridal Shower Cake

Typically, bridal showers are put together by your maid/matron of honor, a close friend, family member or even by your place of work. It’s usually a fun time to get together and celebrate, eat yummy food, play some silly games and open a few gifts. Having your hosts put a theme to them will help you and your fiance get a little “say” in what kinds of gifts you get.

Here’s four creative yet practical theme ideas to pass on to your hosts:

1. KITCHEN / COOKING SHOWER — Obviously this theme will be all about outfitting your kitchen with the necessities that every cook needs. Register at a well-known establishment like Target or Sears, where all your guests can see what has already been bought. You can easily make returns and exchanges at these larger stores. Don’t forget about dish towels and pot holders–those tend to be the things you don’t think about until you need them! And you will need them!

2. LINENS SHOWER — Bath towels, hand towels and wash clothes are all necessities for anyone setting up a home for the first time. If you don’t know what your color scheme will be, just go with neutrals like tan, cream or gray. You can always supplement later with a splash of color. You’re also gonna need some sheets and blankets for your new home, so don’t forget about those!

3. “PERSONAL” / LINGERIE SHOWER — This one may need to be reserved for your very closest friends. You definitely want to have one of these because every newlywed needs some good lingerie, but your boss doesn’t need to be the one buying it for you. Be sure and let your host know to include your sizes in the invitation.

4. HONEYMOON SHOWER — This theme can be all about where you are going after the big day. Register with a travel agent and your guests can purchase gift certificates to help fund your trip! This would also be a great time to register for that nice luggage set you’ve always wanted.

5. FIRE UP THE GRILL BBQ SHOWER — This shower is ideal for those brides wanting to include the groom in on the pre-wedding fun! Guests in attendance can be asked to bring items for the grill, such as BBQ sauces, BBQ king aprons, BBQ tools and even items for the patio while BBQing to their hearts content! While chllin’ by the grill, the host/hostess can set up a very large tub with ice and cold drinks to enjoy while waiting for the food to be done on the grill!

Take a look at our Pinterest boards for more chic ideas in planning all your pre-wedding shindigs. While you’re there, set up some boards to share with your Chicago area wedding planner. Happy showering!

Thursday Trends–Bucking Wedding Traditions Part 2

image

We’re continuing our theme from last week with more ideas of things your wedding could do without…if you so choose.

7. FORMAL WEDDING REGISTRY — Brides and grooms are getting married later–in their late 20’s or early 30’s–and the need for a formal or traditional wedding registry is waning. Take advantage of services that work for you…a honeymoon and/or gift card registry are alternative options.

8. DINNER — No one’s coming to the wedding for the succulent steak or Cornish game hen, folks. Let’s skip the formal dinner and do something fun and themed instead–perhaps a self-serve brunch for late morning weddings, or a dessert or appetizer buffet. You’ll save yourselves a bundle and it’ll be much more fun for you!

image

9. ALCOHOL — If drinking at your wedding isn’t that important to you, skip it. You’ll be amazed at how much this will reduce your wedding budget expenses. If you do not feel strongly about one drink, service wine from your big-box warehouse store to serve.  Also, just going from Premium to House brand is a simple way to cut costs!

10. A “WEDDING CAKE” — When ordering the cake, don’t mention that it’s for a wedding. This will automatically double the price. Birthday cakes have two layers of cake and one layer of filling. Order a “three-tiered cake” instead with the two layers of cake and one layer of filling. Your guests won’t even notice. Then, serve on a buffet vs. being plated and you will not have waste! Or, how about just having cupcakes?

image

11.  WEDDING FAVORS — Unless you can pull this off for cheap and in a non-tacky way, don’t sweat the wedding favors. Instead, do something very simple or have a card at each seat stating that you are making a donation to a charity of YOUR choice. If you have a candy buffet, you could provide little treat bags to fill at a candy station on the way out. A glass votive with your wedding date on it isn’t going to last long at anyone’s house, except for your mother-in-law’s (maybe!).

12.  LIMOUSINE SERVICE— This is something to ask yourselves…do we have a friend who has a nice, fancy convertible, or specialty car? Can we make do with our own car decorated nicely? Mom and Dad driving us to the church might suffice!

The most important thing to remember is that it’s your love, your budget, and your day! Do what you CAN and do what YOU want!

We can certainly help you keep or buck those wedding traditions in the Chicago area, and we’re ready to get started!

Do you have other ideas for wedding traditions that can be “bucked”?

Thursday Trends–Bucking Wedding Traditions Part 1

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Things Your Wedding Can Do Without Beautiful BrideIt seems the trend these days in some weddings is to buck tradition. If your budget is already stretched, sometimes it’s best to reevaluate what things are a must and what things you can do without. We have so many ideas for you in this area that we’re gonna spread them out into two parts.

Here’s the first six things to consider doing without for your wedding:

1. SAVE-THE-DATES — Skip the printed postcards announcing  your wedding date and use e-vites, Facebook, email and the old-fashioned phone to spread the word to out-of-town guests.   (NOTE:  We still feel, however, that there is HUGE value in having this personal touch.)

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Save the Date

2.  RELATIVES TWICE REMOVED — The more you can trim your guest list, the more money you’ll save overall!   Keep the invite list to the must-haves, then send out a wedding announcement to the masses when all is said and done.

3.  LARGE BRIDAL PARTY — While it may look impressive in wedding photos, a large bridal party is going to cause more headache, stress and strain on the wallet.  (You can still incorporate those who have a special place in your heart, by giving them a special task or project to be a part of your wedding.)

4.  MATCHY-MATCHY DRESSES — Don’t even pretend you’re going to find a magical dress that looks good on all the girls that they’ll treasure forever. Choose a theme or color and allow the girls to find their own dresses that fit them (and their wallet). Provide accessories as your gift instead. To at least keep the style consistent to the wedding, maybe have the girls all wear the same shoes. Still not convinced? Take a look at mismatched dresses and shoe ideas on Pinterest.com. While you’re there, check out Perfect Day Wedding Planners’ boards.

5.  PROFESSIONAL HAIR & MAKEUP — For some, this is non-negotiable. We personally LOVE this part but for some, the budget warrants cut backs. Please do not feel guilty spending money on it but if you have a friend who is great in this area, by all means, enlist their services and then save save up for that honeymoon! (REMEMBER:  Anything visible in your wedding day photos is permanent.)

6.  TUXES — Weddings aren’t the formal event they used to be. If you’re wanting a more laid back wedding, have the guys in nice slacks and suspenders; or allow your guys to relax in their style. They’ll love you for it! Just be sure–whatever the girls and guys wear–that it matches your wedding style and theme!

Come back next week as we give you six more ideas of things your wedding can do without! Be sure and call us to schedule your consultation. We absolutely love helping plan the weddings of Chicago area brides!

Thursday Trends — Shoes to Shine in!

Perfect Day Wedding Planners white satin high heel shoes

Ahhhh your wedding shoes. Do you go for comfort or style? Bling or no bling? Dress shoes or Converse for the guys? Ballet shoes, flip flops, or bare feet?! We’ve seen it all! And we’re sure you have too!

As we always say — it’s your wedding! It’s your day! Wear what you want. No one else is walking in your shoes but YOU! There’s no etiquette or tradition to deal with here so that’s a relief.

Perfect Day Wedding Planners bride's comfortable shoes

For starters, check out our Pinterest “Shoes to Shine” board here –> http://pinterest.com/perfectwedder/shoes-to-shine-wedding/

Perfect Day Wedding Planners groomsmen casual shoes

Just a few tips for you:

  • Be sure and practice walking in your shoes before the big day. You’ll want to “break them in” so you don’t get blisters.
  • Definitely wear your shoes to your rehearsal.
  • Don’t wear really high heels if you normally aren’t used to them OR bring a comfy pair of shoes to change into for the reception. Maybe some cute tennis shoes glittered up with sequins?
  • Maybe add a little touch of bling to the bottom of your shoe with an “I DO” sticker like this: http://pinterest.com/pin/284430532689276209/

Lastly, check out one of our past Wedding Planning Boot Camp vendors, Sandy Hurtado of Chi Sandals. She’s got some great sandals!   www.ChiSandals.com
