Thursday Trends–Candy Bars & Buffets: Top 5 Things to Consider

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Candy Buffet and Sweets Table

Life is short, eat candy! Sugary treats at weddings aren’t anything new, but the trend of having a whole table dedicated to PURE CANDY is one that has taken off like a lightening bolt! We guarantee your guests will gather around this buffet several times throughout the day and night. And here’s five sweet ideas to keep them coming back again and again.

1. Color — You’ll of course want to match your wedding theme. Stick with a monochromatic look or go all out with a rainbow of colors and candy types. Also, different shades of the same color looks really chic.

2. Variety — So many sweets, so little time! Malted Milk Balls™, marshmallows, rock candy, Hershey’s Kisses®, gumballs, gummy worms or bears, Pixy Stix, candy sticks, Jordan almonds, lollipops, Tootsie Rolls®, salt water taffy . . . we’re only scratching the surface of your choices. Maybe you’d like to have all the old time candy products like this site offers.  Click here to look through our “Candy Buffet Inspiration Board” on Pinterest.com. Be sure and follow us while you’re there.

3. Labels — Tell your guests what they are sweetening up with by labeling each item. There are lots of free printables available online like this or this. Or pass this detail on to your wedding planner.

4. Levels — Display the treats in different sizes of glass jars or bowls. Make sure you have varying levels so it is pleasing to the eye and easy to reach. We recommend having your wedding planner do all the set up or hiring a candy buffet company to take care of everything from purchasing to set up to clean up. This will ensure you have an expert looking display.

5. Double Duty — Your candy buffet can also serve as your wedding favor. Have some bags customized with your names or a sweet saying like this. Place them on the table so your guests can take their treats home. You could also display this lovely poem in a frame:

Step right up to this candy buffet,

It’s a sweet addition to a wonderful day.

This is a treat we are offering you,

On this day when we say “I Do”.

Use the scoop, choose what you like,

Leave some for others, be polite.

As you enjoy your bag of treats,

Please remember

Love Is Sweet!

Do you have any other suggestions for sweetening up the candy buffet?

Thursday Trends–Making Memories in the Photo Booth!

Perfect Day Wedding Planners photo booth

This is one of those wedding trends that has really moved into the MUST HAVE category. Enter high tech, digital cameras, smart phones and social media, and it is quite possible to capture almost every single aspect of a wedding! And even some moments you didn’t WANT to see!

Whether you hire a company that will bring all their own equipment and props, or decide to go the DIY route–the photo booth is sure to be a hit where lots of silly and fun memories will be made.  We recommend having the photo booth in the same room as your guest tables so it doesn’t get overlooked.

The props can be as simple as this, or as elaborate as this. Providing a table with lots of wigs, glasses, hats, and fun dress up items to choose from will bring the inner child out of anyone. Why not have a game or activity tied to the photo booth?

Using your wedding colors/monogram as a heading on the photo booth strips is a nice touch.

Set out a white board or chalkboard like this so your guests can write little notes, inside jokes or advice to you as a couple.

Pass all these details on to your Chicagoland wedding planner, and let them stock the prop suitcase until it overflows. These silly photo memories from your wedding are sure to be cherished for years and years to come.

Have you been to a wedding with a photo booth?

Thursday Trends-The TOP 4 Flower Thoughts for What’s IN and What’s OUT

Perfect Day Wedding Planners fuschia bridesmaid dresses Looking to make flower decisions for your Chicago suburban wedding? We hope this helps!

What sort of trends for flowers have you seen? What flowers should you choose for your BIG DAY? What flowers are IN and what flowers are OUT currently? Here’s the trends we’re seeing to assist you when choosing your vibrant and beautiful bouquets. Yes–a wedding designer CAN certainly assist you when you get a bit stuck!

#1

IN: The fresh-picked flowers from a garden. Baby’s breath in simple mason jars hung on the end of your ceremony aisles are simple and breathtakingly beautiful! Flowers like hydrangea, garden roses and ranunculous . . . lush arrangements. All of these are IN we say!

OUT: Little teeny bud vases lined up on all the tables are OUT. Get the creativity going and stretch beyond.

#2

IN: Peonies. This flower of 2013 is romantic, soft and lush. It is the most requested flower from our brides when we meet for their design consultation. Because this bloom is only available for a few short months of the year, we recommend trying the garden rose, which gives the same delicate, petal-like appearance.

OUT: Extremely tall centerpieces for EVERY table. Bring in a little variety with some small, medium and tall heights to the room.

#3

IN: Cascading bouquets. Yep, the vintage bouquet is expected to continue it’s return . . . long and slender with plenty of lush flowers and vines.

OUT: Bouquets with too many greens are definitely out.

#4

IN: Garlands of all types–with ribbon, hung from chandeliers, arches and anywhere you have opportunity will amaze your guests. Long head tables that show a garland of peonies, hydrangea and roses will knock your socks off!

OUT: No orchids, baby! It lacks the fresh look, to last the entire day. Who doesn’t want gorgeous wedding photos showing off an array of beautiful flowers?

Real, live flowers in your wedding are just gorgeous for your decor! Have fun as the opportunities are endless!

Thursday Trends — Reception Tents, Chandeliers, Lounges and Bling!

Perfect Day Wedding Planners wedding tent lighting and tables

Are you opting for an outdoor wedding with a huge tent for your reception? Then you’ll definitely want a way to spice up those drab white and canvas ceilings and walls. One of the trends we’re seeing in Chicago area weddings are glamorous tent lighting options–like crystal or black metal chandeliers and hanging vintage Edison bulbs–along with all types of serene and blinged out lounge areas. The use of vintage chairs, tables and accessories can provide a vibe to your day that will make it unique and memorable.

White light strands (also called twinkle lights) always have a sweet impact. We love how they can make any room sparkle. And you can’t beat the price. What about some chinese lanterns dangling from the ceiling in varying shapes, sizes and colors? If you don’t like plain, add some of your floral picks to the chandeliers.

You’ll want to provide your guests a few spaces to rest their tired feet from kicking up their heels. This lounge area has a welcoming ambiance from the fluffy pillows to the cushioned ottomans–a welcoming couch and warm candle lighting. You might have to wake someone up if they get too comfy.

Don’t forget about providing some cozy areas outside your reception tent. If the weather is kind to you, your guests will want some fresh air. Simple seating like this wooden bench on a summer wedding day is a quaint spot to sit for a while.

Even though this picture looks like it may have been from an small, intimate ceremony, we’re loving these modern white chairs and red and white pillows. Scatter these modern chairs throughout your reception area (inside and out) and conversation is sure to spark. Provide some bedazzled citronella candles for lighting as the sun sets and they may never want to leave.

Need some more inspiration? Check out our “Reception Ideas” Pinterest board where we found lots of rustic to glam lounge ideas. We have lots of relationships in the Chicago area for lounge furniture rental. Let’s work together to find just the right touch for your friends and family.

Do you have any lighting or lounge area LOVES?

Thursday Trends — Celebrating Your Day With A Little Patriotism?

d838

Americans tend to be just a little patriotic around the 4th of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Nothing wrong with a little pride in your homeland, huh? In Chicago we do 4th of July quite well, if you don’t mind us saying.  As Chicago suburb wedding planners we LOVE this trend…a trend toward blending this patriotism into wedding celebrations, and we think it’s a BEAUTIFUL thing. We’ve always loved anything Americana, rustic or decor that incorporates flags — so we’re definitely digging this current trend and hope it lasts a long time! In fact, Perfect Day Wedding Planners has a full-service wedding on Veterans’ Day in 2014. The couple’s vision is exceptional, and we can’t wait to start working out all the details to make it perfect!

Bridal Couple in front of American flag

Though we’ve seen brides wear a flag-inspired wedding dress, or even a bright red one, you don’t have to go that extreme! Remember, white goes with everything! Why not just let the rest of the wedding day bling accent YOU as a couple? You can always accessorize with red shoes and jewelry. Having the guys wear flag socks or bow-ties would be a zany and fun touch! Navy tea-length bridesmaids dresses (as opposed to royal blue) would be a perfect compliment and soften the effect a bit of all the bright red accents.

You will have no trouble at all finding decor and patriotic flair — it’s practically everywhere you turn this time of year! If you’re planning your wedding more than a year out, you’ll definitely want to scout out the after-July 4th sales at stores like Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabrics and Michael’s. You can probably rack up the goods on dried-floral centerpieces, table decor, confetti, ribbon, napkins, and rustic Americana for half price or MORE!

Patriotic Stars with a DIY flair

How stunning your guest tables would be with red chargers, white plates and navy linen napkins? Add some bling with silver confetti stars scattered throughout the tables. Cap it off with white chair covers and a shiny silver sash tied in a perfect bow or just go with bright red Chivari chairs. What about flag inspired cake pops as wedding favors? Wow…we could go on and on!

Wouldn’t guests with sparklers lined up as you exit as Mr. and Mrs. be the PERFECT compliment to a patriotic themed wedding? One thing to have your Chicago area wedding planner make sure of, is that your venue allows sparklers. We’ve heard of a few, for fire safety reasons, that will not allow them — even though they are outside the building. How disappointing to find that out late in the game of planning! Two good things about sparklers — they’re great for pictures and there’s no mess to clean up!

4th of July weddings-what FUN!

In our opinion, a perfect bookend to your day would be driving away in a bright red convertible — either a shiny new one or vintage VW Bug!

Share your patriotic wedding ideas with us! We’re always looking for more inspiration to share with our Chicago area brides!

Thursday Trends — What About Some Rustic Fall Foods?

Fall Wedding Decor, Fall Wedding, Fall Wedding TrendsYou have to admit — fall is a beautiful backdrop for any event. From the exquisite array of colors of the leaves on the trees to the somewhat predictable weather — even if it can be a little chilly —  it’s a great time for a wedding. As Chicago suburb wedding planners, the trends we are seeing for the upcoming season are somewhat traditional, yet with their own rustic flair.

For instance, the color scheme has more of a variety. You would think most brides would pick the dark reds, oranges, mustard yellows, browns — traditional fall colors. But we’re also seeing a lot of olive-green, berry, plum and navy. It’s also a great time to incorporate metallics — like gold, copper and bronze. We love helping Chicago brides with the color design of their weddings.

For reception foods, why not serve a hot and hearty soup as your reception appetizer instead of just a plain salad? Pumpkin, butternut squash or tomato bisque are good options. A soup bar could even just be your main course. If you’d rather stick with a salad, consider adding walnuts, baked pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds as garnish options.

Traditional Thanksgiving menus like turkey and gravy, grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, etc. are always a solid choice for the main course. But, we’re also seeing more rustic comfort foods like chicken pot pies, mac and cheese, BBQ, collard greens, potato salad and the like. One of our October brides is having a scrumptious Pumpkin Ravioli…YUM! The sky is the limit as Chicago wedding designers assist you in creating the perfect meal for your day — with flair!

apple pie, fall wedding, pie buffet, chicago wedding plannerInstead of a candy or sweets bar, you could have a pie buffet. Fill it up with scrumptious pies like pumpkin, apple, pecan, cherry, and blackberry. You could even throw in some pumpkin gingerbread whoopee pies, cranberry bread, and gingersnaps! A perfectly festive favor at your guest tables might include a caramel apple wrapped up and tied with a ribbon in your fall color theme. Top it off by adhering a sticker with your unique wedding mon0gram. Wow, all this fall food talk is making us hungry!

Chicago Wedding Planner, Kane County wedding plannerFinally, if you still want to have a wedding cake, the hottest flavor continues to be chocolate — especially in the fall. Or consider another trend we’re seeing — carrot cake, pumpkin spice cake or a cheesecake big enough to serve the whole crowd. Have fun brainstorming with your Chicago wedding planner on how to serve up some fall fun for your guests! We would love to help you with all those details. Perfect Day Wedding Planners & Designers has a few more DAY OF Coordination available for Fall, 2013 weddings. Thursday Trends — How Can Social Media Be Used for Your Wedding?

These days, weddings are not only a social event, they are a social MEDIA event! Even before the couple can walk back down the aisle officially as Mr. and Mrs., there are probably pictures up on Facebook and Instagram! This trend can be a good thing and a bad thing.

The Good:

You will be a busy couple on your wedding day and there’s no way your photographer will be able to catch every moment. In the “old days”, receptions tables were set with disposable cameras to allow guests to catch those unseen moments. With the onslaught of digital cameras and smart phones, there are many ways of capturing all the special moments and fun that your guests are having.

Photo Credit :: Kim Moriguchi (@guchi99)

A trend we’re seeing is assigning a personalized #hashtag for Twitter and Instagram sharing. Hashtags are basically a way to gather all your guests’ photos together in one spot for you to see. For instance, John & Jane are getting married on June 30th — a good hashtag (that hasn’t been used yet or won’t get hijacked) would be #John&Jane6302013. Keep it original and be sure and let your guests know beforehand and at the ceremony and reception.

wedding hashtag

Great display sign to show your personalized Twitter & Instagram #hashtag!

You can inform your guests with a sign on display at the event (see picture at left of one you can purchase on Etsy.com), but you’re probably better off also including it with the favors or something else that guests will be actually taking home with them at the end of the evening.

There are also a few iPhone and Android apps that are free and easy to set-up for yourself and your guests. Check out Wedding Party App which can also be integrated with the free wedding website MyWedding.com. This is another GREAT way to share your engagement story and wedding details online.

Wedding Party App

Another iPhone and Android app we’re seeing is Wedding Snap App. It’s not free, but it definitely has a lot of features that are worth the extra money.

For guests that are not able to make the wedding, live viewing is an option. One such streaming option is Ustream. You can even assign a password so that only people you allow are able to view it.

The Bad:

Unplugged Wedding Request from the Couple | http://www.philchester.com/star-ranch-wedding-lynnettegris/

Maybe you don’t want everyone sharing all your wedding pictures online. Maybe you’d rather everyone just keep their phones at home and focus on the festivities and the fun. That’s OK too! Many couples are ruling their wedding as a “Camera Free Zone” or “Unplugged” because it can actually interfere with the PAID photographer in doing their job well.

If this is your wish, be sure and make your feelings about social media known. Put a note in your wedding program to let your guests know. Make an announcement. Put a sign on every table or at the entrance to your ceremony and reception hall. Be sure and send out a link to the online gallery of your photographer so they can order prints. And finally, if you are a guest at an unplugged wedding, by all means RESPECT the couple’s wishes!
