Thursday Trends — Bridal (& Groom!) Shower Themes for the Creatively-Challenged!

Perfect Day Wedding Planner Bridal Shower Cake

Typically, bridal showers are put together by your maid/matron of honor, a close friend, family member or even by your place of work. It’s usually a fun time to get together and celebrate, eat yummy food, play some silly games and open a few gifts. Having your hosts put a theme to them will help you and your fiance get a little “say” in what kinds of gifts you get.

Here’s four creative yet practical theme ideas to pass on to your hosts:

1. KITCHEN / COOKING SHOWER — Obviously this theme will be all about outfitting your kitchen with the necessities that every cook needs. Register at a well-known establishment like Target or Sears, where all your guests can see what has already been bought. You can easily make returns and exchanges at these larger stores. Don’t forget about dish towels and pot holders–those tend to be the things you don’t think about until you need them! And you will need them!

2. LINENS SHOWER — Bath towels, hand towels and wash clothes are all necessities for anyone setting up a home for the first time. If you don’t know what your color scheme will be, just go with neutrals like tan, cream or gray. You can always supplement later with a splash of color. You’re also gonna need some sheets and blankets for your new home, so don’t forget about those!

3. “PERSONAL” / LINGERIE SHOWER — This one may need to be reserved for your very closest friends. You definitely want to have one of these because every newlywed needs some good lingerie, but your boss doesn’t need to be the one buying it for you. Be sure and let your host know to include your sizes in the invitation.

4. HONEYMOON SHOWER — This theme can be all about where you are going after the big day. Register with a travel agent and your guests can purchase gift certificates to help fund your trip! This would also be a great time to register for that nice luggage set you’ve always wanted.

5. FIRE UP THE GRILL BBQ SHOWER — This shower is ideal for those brides wanting to include the groom in on the pre-wedding fun! Guests in attendance can be asked to bring items for the grill, such as BBQ sauces, BBQ king aprons, BBQ tools and even items for the patio while BBQing to their hearts content! While chllin’ by the grill, the host/hostess can set up a very large tub with ice and cold drinks to enjoy while waiting for the food to be done on the grill!

Take a look at our Pinterest boards for more chic ideas in planning all your pre-wedding shindigs. While you’re there, set up some boards to share with your Chicago area wedding planner. Happy showering!

Tuesday Tips–Receiving Lines . . . Yay or Nay?

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Receiving Line Sweetheart TableHow in the world are you going to see, talk to and thank everyone who comes to your wedding?! You definitely want to extend your gratitude to friends and family who traveled from afar, and receiving lines have usually been the solution to this dilemma. Traditionally, they are also considered good and proper etiquette. But most wedding traditions and etiquette are being questioned like crazy these days! If you decide to buck the status quo, here are other options beyond the traditional receiving line based on the number of people attending your day.

  • Having fewer than about 50 guests? Have a cocktail hour right after your ceremony. After you get those last few pictures done, head on over where everyone is gathered!
  • For a guest list of about 100, you could just have your officiate dismiss guests row by row. You could stay at the front of your ceremony site or just outside the entry doors.
  • Any wedding over 150 guests should probably include the typical receiving line at the reception site or NO LINE AT ALL!

Finally, it is not a necessity to have a receiving line at your wedding. Focus on talking to your family and then meet the remaining guests on the dance floor, where you will likely spend the rest of the evening anyway.  Whatever option you decide on as a couple will be great. Do what fits your personalities and the “feel” of your wedding. Make sure your guests have fun and feel thanked and it’ll all work out just fine.

Tuesday Tips — Hiring A Wedding Planner

264326_535341806524292_312109632_nPlanning a wedding is typically a lot more work than you EVER think it’s going to be. What could be so hard about having all your closest friends and family (and your parent’s closest friends and family…and your groom’s parent’s closest friends and family) coming together to celebrate? Oh, and you have to feed them. And entertain them. Oh wait…maybe it IS a lot more than you expected.

We’ve talked to many a bride who really wanted to do it ALL themselves, but then quickly realized they couldn’t do it all AND enjoy the day. Who wants to be dealing with details, vendors, questions, problems, drama and the like on one of the most important days of their lives? Not you. You want to be pampered. You want to be relaxed. You want to be focused solely on getting ready, having fun and enjoying your fairy tale wedding. Believe me, you really do! And all that will come with enough drama of it’s own!

So how can a wedding planner help you? Where do you start? And what are some things to look for? Well, there are many qualities a great wedding planner needs to have, but here’s what we think should be at the top of the list:

1. Personality — This person is going to be a major part of your life for several months leading up to your big day. Do you “click” with them? Do they seem genuinely interested in making your day the way you and your spouse-to-be want it? Do they appear organized?

2. Connections — Knowing who to trust and what prices are fair can be very stressful. Wedding planners typically have relationships with many types of vendors. Because of these connections, they usually have better negotiated rates than you could work out on your own. This will end up saving you lots of time and money in the long run. Do they have a list of wedding vendors for you to choose from?

3. References — Being able to talk with other couples who have worked with your prospective planner is key. You will want to hear from their experiences. Do they have pictures on social media of other weddings they have done? Do you like what you see?

Personality…Connections…References. Does your wedding planner have these three things?

Show a Little Love To Your Bridesmaids!

As a bride, it is important to remember to love on those girlfriends you call BRIDESMAIDS. You want your best buds to stay that way after the wedding.

A bridesmaid will mean more to you as you get into the planning process, and they can be your lifeline to peace and tranquility through the entire process. Because of this, we have created a list for you as the bride, so you can keep the love flowing to the very end!

Remember that they have other responsibilities  — As the bride, it feels like a full time job and often it can become that way.  However, it is important to remember that your bridesmaids have other commitments (such as their families, job, hobbies, etc.) so be cautious of asking them to do too many DIY tasks along the way, especially on weekends.

Be kind and loving – they are not your personal servants — While you are asking your bridesmaids to do something for you, perhaps ask yourself if you would do the same for her… TRULY.  Remember, she is doing this because she loves you, so please remember to respect her and simply BE KIND throughout the process.

Pick a “Beauty of a Dress” — How many times have we heard ‘I will never wear this bridesmaid dress again! UGLY!’.  If you are the “Bridesmaid of 27 Dresses”, wouldn’t you want one you actually LIKED? While this day is certainly about celebrating the love between you and your Groom-To-Be, wouldn’t it be respectful to give your bridesmaid a day to also feel pretty and elegant?

Eliminate expectations you have of them — So often in life, as well as in planning a wedding, we can put expectations onto others and when they don’t meet our expectations it can turn things really sour. Communicate at the very beginning (if you haven’t asked your bridesmaids yet) what you would ‘appreciate’ from her and if she is able to do so.  Fill the days with lots of grace and appreciation and you will find your wedding planning process so much more enjoyable!

Lastly, just enjoy the privilege of extra time you get to spend with your girlfriends before you tie the knot! — You will look back on these special days and, if all goes well, you will remember it with fondness! (If you find you would like to hire a wedding planner to assist so you can enjoy time with your girlfriends, we are always happy to help!)
