Tuesday Tips–How To Pick A Wedding Theme

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Super Bowl Football Wedding Theme

Combining the dreams, tastes, likes/dislikes, nationalities and personalities of two people for one of the biggest days of your lives is a big feat. Your wedding choices will be the first of many big decisions you make in your married life.

Here are some questions to ask each other and tips for choosing a theme you are both happy with:

1. HERITAGE — Consider the nationalities of your families. Have you always wanted to incorporate traditions from your religion into your wedding day? How will this play out in your choices together? Maybe you’ll both decide a destination wedding that fits with your culture is the best plan!

2. COLORS — This is usually the starting point for many couples. Maybe talk first as a couple about the colors you don’t like and go from there. It’s usually best to pick two or three contrasting colors instead of just one. You could even just go with different hues of the same color. Here’s a great Pinterest board with some color palette ideas. We also have several color inspirations on our Pinterest boards.

3. SEASON — Would you like the season of your wedding to dictate your decor theme? Fall is a wonderful time for an outdoor wedding and usually calls for the rich, deep colors of brown, orange, yellow and green. Winter is a wonderful time for blues and whites or the bright reds and greens of Christmas time. Spring is typically filled with a mix of pastel colors and the fresh floral blooms of the season. Summer is a great time for a beach theme.

4. LOCATION — You’ll want to make sure that any colors or themes you use don’t clash with your venue. If the room where you’re holding your ceremony has an art deco vibe to it, a vintage or shabby chic inspired theme will probably not work out too well.

There are many things to consider as you pick out the basic components to your wedding. However, once these are chosen, other decisions may fall right into place. Your Chicago area wedding planners are standing ready to help!

Tuesday Tips — Will You Be My Bridesmaid? 6 Creative “Proposal” Ideas

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Orange Bridesmaid Dresses Bridesmaid Proposals

The sisters and girlfriends you want standing with you at your wedding have been with you through thick and thin…literally. When it comes to asking them to be a part of your special day, get creative! Between searching Google, Pinterest.com and Etsy.com, you’re sure to hit some goldmines. In fact, don’t forget to check out our Pinterest boards for all things wedding in the Chicago area!

In the mean time, here’s six ideas to get those creative juices flowing:

1. Your bridesmaids are often the ones to ensure you don’t “unravel” before that grand day. Tie that thought in with a handwritten message on torn fabric wrapped around an empty spool. Take a look at this tutorial for step-by-step instructions.

2. You and your fiance play the leading roles in your day, but you gotta have some other stars too! What about a star bracelet with a sweet card that reads “I’ve got the script, but I need the stars.”

3. Don’t promise you’ll pick a dress they can wear again, but make sure and promise a cute dress! This Etsy shop has instant downloads of some great cards with some sweet sayings.

4. Bridesmaid survival kits are always a hit! Pick things that will remind them of your inside jokes while also helping them survive by your side the whole way.

5. He put a ring on your finger, so put a ring on theirs. A candy ring pop can be used in various ways. It’s cute, it’s nostalgic and it’s sugar. Enough said!

6. Make sure they know how important they are. “I couldn’t say ‘I DO’ without YOU!” is always a great sentiment. Or here’s the motherload of questions to ask!

However you ask your “girls”, make it special. Make it memorable. And make it creative!

Tuesday Tips–Receiving Lines . . . Yay or Nay?

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Receiving Line Sweetheart TableHow in the world are you going to see, talk to and thank everyone who comes to your wedding?! You definitely want to extend your gratitude to friends and family who traveled from afar, and receiving lines have usually been the solution to this dilemma. Traditionally, they are also considered good and proper etiquette. But most wedding traditions and etiquette are being questioned like crazy these days! If you decide to buck the status quo, here are other options beyond the traditional receiving line based on the number of people attending your day.

  • Having fewer than about 50 guests? Have a cocktail hour right after your ceremony. After you get those last few pictures done, head on over where everyone is gathered!
  • For a guest list of about 100, you could just have your officiate dismiss guests row by row. You could stay at the front of your ceremony site or just outside the entry doors.
  • Any wedding over 150 guests should probably include the typical receiving line at the reception site or NO LINE AT ALL!

Finally, it is not a necessity to have a receiving line at your wedding. Focus on talking to your family and then meet the remaining guests on the dance floor, where you will likely spend the rest of the evening anyway.  Whatever option you decide on as a couple will be great. Do what fits your personalities and the “feel” of your wedding. Make sure your guests have fun and feel thanked and it’ll all work out just fine.

Tuesday Tips–Top 8 Do’s and Don’ts in Planning Your Wedding

Top 8 Do's and Don'ts in Planning Your Wedding
–> DO set your date so you know which venue works within that. This is the #1 thing to do. Check with your immediate family and closest friends.
–> DON’T hire vendors before your wedding date is booked at your venues.
–> DO book your venue. Definitely the second most important thing to do.
–> DON’T hire your florist without having your wedding party size confirmed and wedding theme chosen. How can you choose without knowing what look you are after?
cropped-istock_000019128966small.jpg
–> DO hire a planner who helps you stick to your budget and saves you costs. Read our post here about tips on hiring a wedding planner.
–> DON’T take on too many DIY projects. You will overwhelm yourself, and max out the stress. We suggest only 1-3 smaller projects. Pinterest wedding ideas will take over your life if you let them. 🙂
–> DO start your wedding timeline (schedule of events) once you begin booking your vendors. Click here for a sample timeline.
–> DON’T jump ahead in the wedding schedule. The suggested order is there for a reason. When one thing gets ahead of another, there can be an unintended ripple effect.

Thursday Trends-The TOP 4 Flower Thoughts for What’s IN and What’s OUT

Perfect Day Wedding Planners fuschia bridesmaid dresses Looking to make flower decisions for your Chicago suburban wedding? We hope this helps!

What sort of trends for flowers have you seen? What flowers should you choose for your BIG DAY? What flowers are IN and what flowers are OUT currently? Here’s the trends we’re seeing to assist you when choosing your vibrant and beautiful bouquets. Yes–a wedding designer CAN certainly assist you when you get a bit stuck!

#1

IN: The fresh-picked flowers from a garden. Baby’s breath in simple mason jars hung on the end of your ceremony aisles are simple and breathtakingly beautiful! Flowers like hydrangea, garden roses and ranunculous . . . lush arrangements. All of these are IN we say!

OUT: Little teeny bud vases lined up on all the tables are OUT. Get the creativity going and stretch beyond.

#2

IN: Peonies. This flower of 2013 is romantic, soft and lush. It is the most requested flower from our brides when we meet for their design consultation. Because this bloom is only available for a few short months of the year, we recommend trying the garden rose, which gives the same delicate, petal-like appearance.

OUT: Extremely tall centerpieces for EVERY table. Bring in a little variety with some small, medium and tall heights to the room.

#3

IN: Cascading bouquets. Yep, the vintage bouquet is expected to continue it’s return . . . long and slender with plenty of lush flowers and vines.

OUT: Bouquets with too many greens are definitely out.

#4

IN: Garlands of all types–with ribbon, hung from chandeliers, arches and anywhere you have opportunity will amaze your guests. Long head tables that show a garland of peonies, hydrangea and roses will knock your socks off!

OUT: No orchids, baby! It lacks the fresh look, to last the entire day. Who doesn’t want gorgeous wedding photos showing off an array of beautiful flowers?

Real, live flowers in your wedding are just gorgeous for your decor! Have fun as the opportunities are endless!

Feature Friday: Airbrush Makeup and What to Consider for Your Wedding!

We are now launching our “FEATURE FRIDAY” once in a while — posts filled with information about wedding experts we feel are professional and that we want to share with you, the bride.

Perfect Day Wedding Planners airbrush makeup makeupToday’s FEATURE FRIDAY is our Chicago area Airbrush Makeup Expert from Outer Beauty Airbrush Makeup.

1) What is the difference of airbrush makeup? Airbrush makeup is applied with an airbrush gun using a low powered compressor. Airbrush makeup is not regular store bought foundation! It is a specialized blend that is made to be transfer and sweat-resistant. It is made especially for use with the compressor so that just the right amount is dispensed in the right consistency

2) What is difference between airbrush and standard makeup application? As opposed to standard (regular) makeup foundation application using a brush or sponge, airbrush makeup is applied using an airbrush gun and cosmetic low powered compressor. Instead of “cakeing” on makeup with a sponge or brush, the airbrush makeup comes out in thousands of tiny drops of foundation which dries almost instantly. This allows for a flawless, even finish, feeling light as if you were not wearing anything at all! Also, airbrush makeup is not limited to the face! It effortlessly and quickly blends and covers the neck and decollete, and can even be used as far as the shoulders and back. As a bride, don’t let someone “slather” foundation on your face…airbrush it on!

3) What can we expect on our wedding day from an airbrush makeup experience?  What happens? Working in the wedding industry you quickly learn that, for the bride, the wedding day can be stressful. It is my job, as a makeup artist and friend, to make it as stress free as possible. The day of the wedding we come early to set up, stick to a timeline that the bride approves (with assistance from her Chicago wedding planner) and get to work! With big wedding parties, Outer Beauty will bring any needed assistants or an additional makeup artist, so that all runs smoothly and on time. The makeup application is meant to be relaxing and enjoyable.

4) How does airbrush makeup work with my wedding photographs?  Airbrush makeup has long been used in TV and film as well as commercial print. It is fitting then, that it’s used in wedding photographs. In working with many photographers, they have said that not only does it photograph beautifully, but also limits editing to the face. There is a remarkable difference in bridal photographs from someone that had their makeup airbrushed and those that have not. Needless to say, airbrushed makeup looks flawless and will help make your lifetime event a timeless treasure.

5)  Does airbrush makeup work/is it suggested for people with skin allergies? What about someone going through chemotherapy or radiation treatments (such as a mom for cancer)?  When working with a product that is transfer, sweat resistant it is hard to say that it is hypoallergenic. HOWEVER, it has not had any adverse affects on anyone I have worked on. In fact, I met a bride that said she cannot use ANYTHING on her face, including high-end hypoallergenic makeup such as Clinque or prescriptives. She came to me curious if her face would break out and be itchy like it has reacted in the past. Well, there was only one way to find out! After I airbrushed her, I sent her on her way and told her to email me with any good or bad reactions. To her surprise, she did not break out, she was not itchy, and she said that she wouldn’t even THINK of doing her makeup any other way for her wedding!  That is also why this makeup is fantastic on, not just people with sensitive skin or allergies, but also individuals going through chemotherapy or radiation.

6) What can I expect from a makeup preview session and what is included in this?  Makeup previews are done in studio and can take anywhere from 1-2 hours. This all depends on the bride and how comfortable she is with the makeup (and how much fun we are having). With the preview, we start by talking about the wedding. How the bride’s hair will look; what color is the wedding gown; and what theme is she looking to create…i.e. traditional, vintage, modern, etc. With that, I create a look that I feel would be flattering to the bride. We do eye makeup, lashes, airbrush foundation, blush and lips. From there, we critique the look and see what we can add or change, so the bride feels 110% comfortable before signing the contract.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

IN ADDITION,

Where did you get your experience?  I began working in 2006 with an amazing makeup artist that has worked for CBS, wedding magazines, NARS, and MAC  to name a few. She took me under her wing and taught me everything I know. Makeup is a constantly changing industry, all based on fashion and seasons, so it’s important to keep learning. Currently I am certified by a Los Angeles school — Last Looks Academy, Outstanding Achievement in Eye Makeup.

-How many weddings do you do in a day? Typically, Chicago is a seasonal city for weddings. During the spring, summer and fall I can have anywhere from 1-2 weddings a weekend and several previews during the week. In the winter months, weddings are sparse, so that’s when I take advantage of my “free” time and involve myself in Bridal Boot Camps, taking classes, organizing classes and teaching makeup application, as well as volunteering for various cancer programs and Feed My Starving Children.

-Any tips for a bride?  Remember, we are not here to make you look like a drag queen, but a better more glamorous version of yourself! Communication is key! I always encourage brides to invest in a good lip gloss (my favorite is NARS)  and some translucent powder for the face (such as bare minerals, mineral veil). Like all girls, we have bad hair days and even bad face days. Your wedding day is NOT to be one of those days! Hire someone to pamper you and make sure you do not have a bad face day! You want to look back at your wedding and see how beautiful you really looked!
