Tuesday Tips–How To Pick A Wedding Theme

Perfect Day Wedding Planners Super Bowl Football Wedding Theme

Combining the dreams, tastes, likes/dislikes, nationalities and personalities of two people for one of the biggest days of your lives is a big feat. Your wedding choices will be the first of many big decisions you make in your married life.

Here are some questions to ask each other and tips for choosing a theme you are both happy with:

1. HERITAGE — Consider the nationalities of your families. Have you always wanted to incorporate traditions from your religion into your wedding day? How will this play out in your choices together? Maybe you’ll both decide a destination wedding that fits with your culture is the best plan!

2. COLORS — This is usually the starting point for many couples. Maybe talk first as a couple about the colors you don’t like and go from there. It’s usually best to pick two or three contrasting colors instead of just one. You could even just go with different hues of the same color. Here’s a great Pinterest board with some color palette ideas. We also have several color inspirations on our Pinterest boards.

3. SEASON — Would you like the season of your wedding to dictate your decor theme? Fall is a wonderful time for an outdoor wedding and usually calls for the rich, deep colors of brown, orange, yellow and green. Winter is a wonderful time for blues and whites or the bright reds and greens of Christmas time. Spring is typically filled with a mix of pastel colors and the fresh floral blooms of the season. Summer is a great time for a beach theme.

4. LOCATION — You’ll want to make sure that any colors or themes you use don’t clash with your venue. If the room where you’re holding your ceremony has an art deco vibe to it, a vintage or shabby chic inspired theme will probably not work out too well.

There are many things to consider as you pick out the basic components to your wedding. However, once these are chosen, other decisions may fall right into place. Your Chicago area wedding planners are standing ready to help!

Tuesday Tips — Throwing Yourself an Engagement Party?

Perfect Day Wedding Planners wedding ring

After he’s popped the question and put a ring on it, you want to tell the world–right? And what better way than to throw a PARTY?! This is certainly not a requirement or matter of etiquette. Tradition says that the parents of the bride-to-be should be the ones to host an engagement party. If that’s not feasible, or you want the engagement announcement to be a surprise, you could just throw it yourselves! Heck, it seems everyone’s bucking wedding traditions these days!

Here are some tips along with questions to ask yourselves as a couple before you embark on this pre-wedding adventure.

1. Do you want a formal or casual gathering? Formal would probably require a sit-down dinner. Do you have a space large enough to host everyone you would want to invite? Does your budget allow for that? A casual affair is basically “anything goes”. What about just an intimate potluck with your very closest friends and family? Or an outside BBQ?

2. Do you want to send out invitations? Or just invite people by phone, text, email or e-vites?

3. What kind of food do you want to serve? Again, this boils down to formal or casual. Don’t try to make it so big of a deal that everyone gets stressed out. Save that adrenaline for your wedding planning! Food and drink should be simple, yet sufficient.

4. Do you want lots of decor or does it even matter? You could go all out with a beach or vintage theme, country or Disney dress-up party, OR your focus could just be on the fun, fellowship and the announcement! If you have your basic wedding theme picked out, then maybe try to match that. If not, no biggie…just go with your favorite colors! Check out our Pinterest board here for some ideas.

5. Do you want to provide entertainment? A piano player would be a lovely background to a formal affair.

6. Do you want to have some fun activities and/or games? Bags or Cornhole is always a party hit. Those trivia games about the couple are sure to bring much laughter. Here’s some other ideas for engagement party games.

7. Everyone is going to want to see the rock. So be sure and get a nice manicure and a good cleaning on that ring before your party. You know you’ll be showing it off all night long!

Tuesday Tips–Top 5 Ways to Work WITH Your Wedding Planner

Perfect Day Wedding Planners brochure tablefHelp Them Help You

Your wedding planner wants to know how you met your fiance’, how you knew they were the one, how you got engaged and the thing you love most about each other. Tell them about your interests, your passions, your dreams. What are your favorite colors? What is an absolute “NO WAY” for your day? The more they know, the more your wedding planner can help make your day a reflection of you as a couple.

Communicate

Good communication is the cornerstone to getting things done. Would you rather your planner call, email, or text when they have a question? What times of day or evening are better for you to talk? Be sure and get back to your planner in a timely manner. Remember, they are here for you. Make yourself available.

Be A Team Player

You and your planner have a common goal. You’re planning one of the best days of your life! Work together to figure out the areas you would like to stay involved, along with the areas you could use more help. Make sure your wedding party knows that the wedding planner is there to ensure YOUR plans happen. Go Team!

Trust

Once you have decided to hire a planner, trust them to do their job. Let them find the best vendors and prices for you. Listen to and consider their advice. They will make suggestions, but ultimately the decisions are always yours.

Relax

At the venue walk through, you will be able to hand over to your wedding planner all the details that need to be set up. Enjoy this time before your wedding! Let them do the worrying for you! And the next time you start to fret, go get a mani/pedi and call your planner in the morning.

Thursday Trends — Celebrating Your Day With A Little Patriotism?

d838

Americans tend to be just a little patriotic around the 4th of July, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Nothing wrong with a little pride in your homeland, huh? In Chicago we do 4th of July quite well, if you don’t mind us saying.  As Chicago suburb wedding planners we LOVE this trend…a trend toward blending this patriotism into wedding celebrations, and we think it’s a BEAUTIFUL thing. We’ve always loved anything Americana, rustic or decor that incorporates flags — so we’re definitely digging this current trend and hope it lasts a long time! In fact, Perfect Day Wedding Planners has a full-service wedding on Veterans’ Day in 2014. The couple’s vision is exceptional, and we can’t wait to start working out all the details to make it perfect!

Bridal Couple in front of American flag

Though we’ve seen brides wear a flag-inspired wedding dress, or even a bright red one, you don’t have to go that extreme! Remember, white goes with everything! Why not just let the rest of the wedding day bling accent YOU as a couple? You can always accessorize with red shoes and jewelry. Having the guys wear flag socks or bow-ties would be a zany and fun touch! Navy tea-length bridesmaids dresses (as opposed to royal blue) would be a perfect compliment and soften the effect a bit of all the bright red accents.

You will have no trouble at all finding decor and patriotic flair — it’s practically everywhere you turn this time of year! If you’re planning your wedding more than a year out, you’ll definitely want to scout out the after-July 4th sales at stores like Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabrics and Michael’s. You can probably rack up the goods on dried-floral centerpieces, table decor, confetti, ribbon, napkins, and rustic Americana for half price or MORE!

Patriotic Stars with a DIY flair

How stunning your guest tables would be with red chargers, white plates and navy linen napkins? Add some bling with silver confetti stars scattered throughout the tables. Cap it off with white chair covers and a shiny silver sash tied in a perfect bow or just go with bright red Chivari chairs. What about flag inspired cake pops as wedding favors? Wow…we could go on and on!

Wouldn’t guests with sparklers lined up as you exit as Mr. and Mrs. be the PERFECT compliment to a patriotic themed wedding? One thing to have your Chicago area wedding planner make sure of, is that your venue allows sparklers. We’ve heard of a few, for fire safety reasons, that will not allow them — even though they are outside the building. How disappointing to find that out late in the game of planning! Two good things about sparklers — they’re great for pictures and there’s no mess to clean up!

In our opinion, a perfect bookend to your day would be driving away in a bright red convertible — either a shiny new one or vintage VW Bug!

Tuesday Tips — Hiring A Wedding Planner

264326_535341806524292_312109632_nPlanning a wedding is typically a lot more work than you EVER think it’s going to be. What could be so hard about having all your closest friends and family (and your parent’s closest friends and family…and your groom’s parent’s closest friends and family) coming together to celebrate? Oh, and you have to feed them. And entertain them. Oh wait…maybe it IS a lot more than you expected.

We’ve talked to many a bride who really wanted to do it ALL themselves, but then quickly realized they couldn’t do it all AND enjoy the day. Who wants to be dealing with details, vendors, questions, problems, drama and the like on one of the most important days of their lives? Not you. You want to be pampered. You want to be relaxed. You want to be focused solely on getting ready, having fun and enjoying your fairy tale wedding. Believe me, you really do! And all that will come with enough drama of it’s own!

So how can a wedding planner help you? Where do you start? And what are some things to look for? Well, there are many qualities a great wedding planner needs to have, but here’s what we think should be at the top of the list:

1. Personality — This person is going to be a major part of your life for several months leading up to your big day. Do you “click” with them? Do they seem genuinely interested in making your day the way you and your spouse-to-be want it? Do they appear organized?

2. Connections — Knowing who to trust and what prices are fair can be very stressful. Wedding planners typically have relationships with many types of vendors. Because of these connections, they usually have better negotiated rates than you could work out on your own. This will end up saving you lots of time and money in the long run. Do they have a list of wedding vendors for you to choose from?

3. References — Being able to talk with other couples who have worked with your prospective planner is key. You will want to hear from their experiences. Do they have pictures on social media of other weddings they have done? Do you like what you see?

Personality…Connections…References. Does your wedding planner have these three things?

Tuesday Tips – Outdoor Weddings

perfect day wedding planners amanda and andrew bride entering ceremonyDuring the summer and fall we see a lot more outdoor weddings. Sometimes the ceremony is inside and then the reception outside, or vice versa. Unfortunately, the weather is not always your friend. Obviously the best case scenario is that it is a beautiful sunny day with minimal wind. And that is what we hope for you! But, just in case the day is not ideal, it is always best to have a “Plan B” in place.

Here are 10 tips to keep in mind when planning an outdoor wedding:

  1. Be sure and let guests know that it is an outdoor wedding so they can plan their attire accordingly. They may want to bring an umbrella, wear flats instead of heels, bring a sweater, etc.
  2. Be sure and order a tent just in case it rains. Make sure to have people on hand who can put it up at the last minute. Or go ahead and have it up and if it’s not needed, it can be used for a kids area!
  3. Consider also ordering temporary floors for use in the tent. High heels and chair legs WILL sink in the wet grass.
  4. Have the grounds sprayed for bugs about an hour before the ceremony or reception starts. Also, have bottles of mosquito spray handy for guests.
  5. In case of wind, you don’t want all your candles to blow out. Put hurricane lamps around all of your candles. Or use battery operated lights for your decor instead of candles.
  6. Have your seamstress sew some tiny weights on the end of your veil. This will keep it from blowing in your face.
  7. Make sure that any table decorations are weighted down — things like seating cards, paper napkins, etc.
  8. Face your guests away from the sun to avoid a glare. Also, avoid metal chairs if it’s going to be hot.
  9. Provide lemonade or water to keep your guests from getting dehydrated. If there’s a chance it might be cooler than normal, provide hot coffee and tea.
  10. Print your ceremony program on thick fan shaped paper. This will be practical and useful in case it’s a hot day.
